BDNF is the protein your brain uses to build and keep connections. It falls with age — and it is the mechanism most brain health supplements are trying to reach.
What BDNF actually is
Your brain cells talk to each other across tiny gaps. Keeping those connections healthy takes maintenance, and one of the main maintenance signals is a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor — BDNF for short.
Think of BDNF as fertilizer for existing connections. When there is plenty of it, cells repair themselves, form new links, and hold onto what they learn. When there is less of it, the connections still work — they just get maintained more slowly.
Why it changes after 50
BDNF levels tend to decline gradually with age. That decline is normal, not a disease, and it is one reason recall feels slower in your fifties than it did in your thirties. The word you are looking for is still there. It just takes an extra second to arrive.
This is the part worth being clear about: slower is not the same as failing. A brain with less maintenance signal is under-supported, not broken.
What raises it — in order of evidence
Exercise has the strongest human evidence of anything studied. Aerobic activity raises BDNF measurably, and it is free.
Sleep matters next. Deep sleep is when most repair work happens, so short or fragmented nights blunt the benefit of everything else you do.
Learning something genuinely new — an instrument, a language, a craft — gives the signal something to act on. Repeating what you already know does much less.
Then come dietary compounds. Some ingredients used in brain health supplements, including Lion's Mane mushroom, have been studied for their effect on nerve growth pathways. The research is early-stage and mostly small. That is an honest reason to be interested and a bad reason to expect a transformation.
How to read a supplement label with BDNF in mind
Look for named ingredients at disclosed doses. If a label says "proprietary cognitive blend, 800 mg," you cannot tell whether the studied ingredient is present at a studied amount or a trace.
Be skeptical of any product that claims to raise BDNF by a specific percentage in a specific number of days. No supplement has earned that claim.
